The traditional Relay/light client is a complex structure and expensive to operate, if you do it properly.
Pantos/TAST estimated an operation cost of 9mil euros p.a in gas. They compromised the security to reduce the cost to 900k euros p.a in gas.
I’ve been working on this for more than 6 mo and cannot see the economic value of it in public blockchain setting, unless there is heavy subsidy on it.
Metronome has a more economical solution, but it relies on trusted third parties.

There are some solutions on interoperability that can be alternatives to bridge. I'd recommend this paper, by VB, as a starter. An old document, but I guess the problem space hasn't changed much since. https://allquantor.at/blockchainbib/pdf/vitalik2016chain.pdf
